Using the term  'guagua' to refer to a bus is characteristic of the Canary Islands and Spanish-speaking countries such as Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Equatorial Guinea. There is no consensus regarding the origin of the word. Some argue that it comes from Wa & Wa Co. Inc. , the first American factory to export buses to Cuba. However, some lexicographers maintain that its use predates the arrival of Americans to the largest island in the Caribbean.
